Online Group Classes

Yoga for Osteoporosis

Coming soon!

About The Classes

I’m hoping to offer live On-line Group Yoga Classes for people living with osteoporosis. I am fully qualified and experienced in teaching yoga especially modified for this condition. You will be offered gentle yoga routines especially adapted to develop posture, flexibility and balance while protecting your bones.

Depending on demand, there will be a choice of:

  • Chair-based classes, suitable for those with limited mobility or who find it difficult to get up and down from the floor
  • All-round classes, suitable for those who are able to move easily from lying on the mat, to seated, to standing (and back again!)

WHO ARE THE CLASSES FOR?

On-line group classes are best suited to people who are in good health apart from having low bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis).

For some people it is better to arrange an individual consultation and 1-1 class in the first instance. You can then chat with the teacher to decide whether group classes would be suitable for you. This includes:

  • People with other health conditions in addition to osteoporosis/osteopenia.
  • People who have had fractures
  • People with very low bone density
WHAT DAY AND TIME WILL THEY BE OFFERED?

Have your say! When you register your interest via the form below, you can state your preferences for day and time. Days and times will be chosen to suit as many people as possible.

As a volunteer and retiree, I do have other commitments to work around. My plan is eventually to offer the classes in 4-week blocks. You can, of course, join repeated blocks of classes provided there are spaces available.

HOW MUCH WILL THE CLASSES COST

Payment for the classes will be a donation to the Royal Osteoporosis Society (UK) via my JustGiving page. There will be a “suggested donation”, based on the cost of a yoga class in a typical studio, but you can donate as much or as little as you can afford.

(All participants will be asked to keep their donation amounts hidden, so that no-one feels under pressure to pay more than they can afford).

Important note: Although the proceeds from these classes benefit the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS), they are NOT organised by ROS. I teach the classes based on my own training, qualifications and experience (see About The Teacher below.)

ABOUT THE TEACHER

I have been specialising in Yoga for Osteoporosis for over 5 years and am a regular volunteer for the Royal Osteoporosis Society.

I’m passionate about enabling people with osteoporosis and other health conditions to maintain their quality of life through exercise. I am committed to teaching yoga in a way which protects the bones and joints while improving posture, flexibility, strength, balance and wellbeing.

I myself have osteoporosis, and since my diagnosis I have modified my own practice to protect my spine. I have found that modified poses can offer the same feelings of integrity and control as deeper versions of the poses.

MY TEACHING CREDENTIALS
  • Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga
  • Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral (exercise for people with chronic health conditions, including osteoporosis)
  • Level 3 Award in Designing Exercise Programmes for Older Adults
  • Level 3 Award in Supporting Participation in Physical Activity: Disability and Impairment
  • Member of Chartered institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA)

What Happens Next?

To register your interest and express your preferences for day and time, fill in the form below. The form asks for brief details about your mobility and health just to check which type of class would be best suited for you*, and also allows you to select your preferred date and time. THIS FORM DOES NOT COMMIT YOU TO ANYTHING – and all details will be treated as confidential and stored on a secure drive.

Over the next few weeks: I will offer ‘Taster’ classes to those who have registered their interest. This will allow you to try out this mode of teaching, and also help me to ensure that the eventual classes meet the needs of participants

In the coming months: I will start offering regular blocks of classes to those who have registered their interest

*You will be able to give fuller information about any health or mobility needs later on when the classes go ahead.
